AUSTIN, Texas - The United States women's national team opened its 2023 SheBelieves Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday night at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas.
Mallory Pugh scored the game's lone goal in the 52nd minute, finishing off a feed from Sophia Smith. The goal was Pugh's first for the USWNT since October 2021.
The United States dominated possession and created the better chances throughout the match, but they were unable to add to their lead. Ireland had a few good chances of their own, but they were unable to find the back of the net.
The win is the USWNT's first under new head coach Vlatko Andonovski. The team will continue its SheBelieves Cup campaign on Thursday against Canada in Nashville, Tennessee.
