The recently released Democracy Index paints a concerning picture of the global state of democracy. According to the index, published by the Economist Group, 2022 saw a decline in the average global score, reaching its lowest level since its inception in 2006.

Measuring Democratic Health

The Democracy Index assesses the quality of democracy in 165 independent states and two territories based on 60 indicators grouped into five categories: pluralism, civil liberties, political culture, political participation, and government functioning.

Despite hopes for a rebound following the easing of pandemic-related restrictions, the global index score remained stagnant in 2022.
